3rd June 1954: Sam arrives on the Queen Mary, in the body of Philip Dumont, a handsome adventurer whose ex-wife, Catherine, is about to marry Italian mobster Vincent ‘Vinnie the Viper’ Loggia. Not long ago, during one of his sailing excursions, Philip had gone missing at sea; Catherine’s father, the bombastic shipping magnate, Weathers Farlington, convinced his daughter to have the marriage annulled, thereby leaving the way clear for him to marry her off to someone more ‘suitable’. It seems that Weather’s shipping business is actually about to go under, but could be saved by a takeover bid by the Loggia family. Philip’s reappearance has sent the marriage preparations into disarray: Catherine has realised she is still in love with him; Weathers is furious that he could jeopardise the wedding; while Vinnie simply sees Philip as a threat. Al tells Sam that if he cannot stop the wedding, Philip will commit suicide and Catherine will eventually die of a broken heart; then Sam realises that Philip won’t kill himself – instead Vinnie will murder him in cold blood…
